Schools in Manipur – In every sense, education is one of the fundamental factors of the development of any state or country. No country can achieve sustainable economic development without substantial investment in education. Usually, education is provided in schools, colleges and universities. The school system in Manipur state has four levels – lower primary (age 6 to 10), upper primary (11 and 12), secondary (13 to 15) and senior secondary (17 and 18).

The overall situation of primary, secondary and senior secondary school education of Manipur state is good as the state has been focusing on improving the quality of its schools.

The state has witnessed an upward curve in its literacy rate from 64.83% in Census 2001 to 74.04% in Census 2011. The drop-out rate at primary level (I-V) in the state reduced from 18.42% in 2007-08 to 11.55% in 2011-12. While the drop-out rate was reduced from 4.33% to 1.84% at the upper primary level (VI-VIII). A separate Department of Education was created for the first time in Manipur on January 20, 1950, to regulate the education system of the state.

At present, the Education Department of Manipur has been divided into 4 (four) different entities viz (1) Department of Education (University and Higher Education), (2) Department of Education (S), (3) State Council of Educational Research and Training, Government of Manipur and (4) Department of Adult Education.

To regulate the school education in the state, the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur was established in 1972. The Board of Secondary Education regulates the functioning of primary to higher secondary schools in the state. At present 786 high and higher secondary schools (226 Government, 103 Government aided and 457 Private) are affiliated to the board. The schools in the state are either managed by the government or by private bodies. Some of the noteworthy schools in Manipur are Shishu Nistha Niketan School, Slopeland Public School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Mega Manipur School, etc.

Manipur Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education-(BSEM and COHSEM)

With an aim to regulate the school education in the state, the Department of Education, Government of Manipur formedtheManipur Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education-(BSEM & COHSEM). Manipur Board is responsible to conduct the board exams for classes 10 and 12. The primary role of Manipur Secondary and Higher Secondary board is to streamline the education for Class 1 to 12. The board is responsible to perform the following roles:

Formulating the curriculum and syllabus
Preparing, printing and distribution of the textbooks
Development of the evaluation techniques and the examination reforms
Conducting Secondary and Higher Secondary Examinations
Tabulation of marks to assess the performance of students in the Secondary and Higher Secondary Examinations

Manipur Secondary and Higher Secondary Exams

The Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BSEM) is responsible to organize the board exams for the class 10 and the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (COHSEM) conducts the public exams for class 12. As per the new education policy of India, there will be a board exam for class 10. Therefore, BSEM will not be conducting class 10 exams from now onwards. Detail of both HSLC Exams and HSE Exams is provided below:

BSEM Class 10 HSLC Exams

The Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BSEM) used to conduct the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Class 10 exams during the months of March and April. As per the new education policy of India, this exam will be scrapped now onward. Last year, The Manipur Board HSLC exams were conducted between February 20 and March 15, 2019. Results for the same were published on May 18, 2019. Statistics of the previous year’s HSLC exams can be checked in the table below:

COHSEM Class 12 HSE Exams

The Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (COHSEM) conducts the Class 12 board exams in the state. Last year, the Manipur Board HSE exam was conducted between February 18 and March 20, 2019. Results for the same were declared on May 8, 2019. Statistics of the previous year’s HSE exams are furnished in the table below:
